In AY2027, its capacity of third-year transfer students will also be increased by 10. In Japan, this is the only program that allows students to learn everything, from basics to applications, about semiconductor systems, which will support the development of a future world of utilization of AI. The Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering also plans to establish a Program of Semiconductor Systems in AY2029.With the Research Institute for Semiconductor Engineering, which has been a world-leading center of R&D and human resource development focusing on semiconductors, HU has a long history of serving as a hub for education and research on semiconductors. One of Japanese largest super clean rooms, an essential facility for semiconductor manufacturing, is housed in the institute, providing an excellent research environment. Students can develop a high level of competency by gaining experience in both academic research and R&D for semiconductor devices. As a leader of the Setouchi Semiconductor Consortium, we are involved in collaboration between industry, academia, and government in developing highly skilled talent with extensive knowledge of the entire semiconductor industry.HU participates in the U.S.-Japan University Partnership for Workforce Advancement and Research & Development in Semiconductors for the Future (UPWARDS) to develop next-generation semiconductor talent and promote research and development. Supported by the Japanese and U.S. governments, this partnership was launched in line with the memorandum of understanding signed at the G7 Hiroshima Summit to promote a Japan-U.S. joint project focusing on semiconductors with the participation of five Japanese universities and six U.S. universities, as well as Micron Technology and Tokyo Electron as supporter companies. The five-year project, from 2023 to 2028, aims to create a hub for training semiconductor experts and to strengthen semiconductor-related research and development. Selected as a member in recognition of its status as one of Japan’s leading universities, HU has contributed to the international diversification and advancement of semiconductor technology and the development of specialized human resources. This is an undergraduate program through Japan-U.S. collaboration focusing on human resource development in the semiconductor field, the first of its kind in Japan. The University of Idaho will establish a Hiroshima Campus within HU’s Higashihiroshima Campus and recruit students from both within Japan and overseas, with a view to accepting students from August 2026 onward. As one of the leading comprehensive research universities in the U.S., the University of Idaho has received a Research 1 designation, the highest rating for research universities across the country, in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Through the joint operation of this campus, HU will contribute to developing practical human resources who can play active roles globally in the semiconductor field, as well as to strengthening Japan–U.S. collaboration in higher education.*This capacity expansion plan will be finalized after the procedures with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology are completed.AY2025Undergraduate programSchool of Informatics and Data ScienceCapacity of first-year students 150 ► 180 (increasing by 30)Capacity of third-year transfer students 5 ► 20 (increasing by 15)Program of Semiconductor Systems, Cluster 2, School of Engineering (newly established)Capacity of first-year students 55Master’s programInformatics and Data Science Program, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering36 ► 70 (increasing by 34)AY2027 and beyond (planned)Undergraduate programProgram of Semiconductor Systems, Cluster 2, School of EngineeringCapacity of third-year transfer students 10Master’s programInformatics and Data Science Program, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering70 ► 85 (increasing by 15)Program of DX Science and Program of Semiconductor Systems, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering (newly established)140Doctoral programProgram of DX Science and Program of Semiconductor Systems, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering (newly established)20● Hiroshima University● Institute of Science Tokyo● Kyushu University● Nagoya University● Tohoku UniversityState UniversitySix U.S. universities● Boise State University● Purdue University● Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute● Rochester Institute of Technology● University of Washington● Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Plan to expand the capacity of students in information-related disciplinesMaking a full-scale commitment to enhancing the development of semiconductor talent who can serve as next-generation leadersStrengthening the educational system and expanding the admission/transfer capacity
