the University Presidents for Peace 1st Conference in Hiroshima P23 Education (University of Peace)P33 Social and Industry-Academia Collaboration08institutions representing the countries or regions of each speaker.On 6 August 2024, the University Presidents for Peace 1st Conference in Hiroshima was held at the SENDA LAB on the Higashi-Senda Campus of HU. Approximately 30 presidents, vice-presidents, and representatives from 10 universities across seven countries and regions gathered to discuss the role of universities in promoting sustainable world peace.At the conclusion of the conference, participants adopted the “University Presidents for Peace Declaration”, which reflected the discussions held, and they exchanged firm handshakes, committing to further cooperation. With ongoing conflicts in many parts of the world, interest in peace continues to grow.I believe that it is essential for each of us to take an active role in promoting peace as a personal issue. In 1995, he became a professor at Shimane Medical University and later joined then the Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Hiroshima University in 2002. After serving as Director of Hiroshima University Hospital, he was appointed to his current position in 2015. He was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in the same year.“As a university of peace”: organizing the University Presidents for Peace 1st Conference in HiroshimaEstablished on the site where the first atomic bomb was dropped, HU has a unique historical and social background. As such, the university has been committed to advancing peace science through international education and research, guided by the Guiding Principle of “The Pursuit of Peace.” Since 2018, the “Peace Lecture Marathon” has been held eight times at HU, attracting over 1,000 participants in total. The past series of the Peace Lecture Marathon saw HU’s faculty and administrative members, home and international students engaging attentively with the lectures, actively participating in the question-and-answer sessions.These lectures, featuring international leaders such as government representatives and ambassadors in Tokyo, have raised awareness of the event’s primary goal: the “importance of passing on peace to future generations.” Additionally, they have encouraged further collaboration between HU and the universities and research To our stakeholdersI have put considerable effort to build a solid foundation in the three pillars of education, research, and social contribution at HU. I have also taken the initiative to disseminate relevant information to ensure that the university’s strengths are properly evaluated. HU will effectively communicate through this report and various other channels that it is contributing to the resolution of various social issues by making use of its strength of “convergence knowledge” and returning to society the results generated from interdisciplinary education and research that transcends existing academic disciplines, thereby having an innovative impact. To advance further, the university will enhance its collaboration with stakeholders and aims to become a “University of World-Wide Repute and Splendor for Years into the Future.”Alongside the members of HU, I will do my utmost to achieve As an intellectual center linking local and international communities“The Town & Gown initiative” is a new form of local development in which the Town (local residents and local government) and the Gown (university) collaborate to achieve sustainable local development and the evolution of the university together.
