P23 Education (human resources development)P27 ResearchP19 Education (internationality)07“International Institute for Sustainability with Knotted Chiral Meta Matter (SKCM²)” at HU was selected for the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), while “the Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing” at HU was also selected as one of the WISE Program (Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education). Hiroshima University is the only university in the Chugoku-Shikoku region to have been selected for both of these programs. These programs bring together the world’s most spirited researchers to engage in cutting-edge research and development that will save the planet. In addition, “the Program for Forming Japan’s Peak Research Universities (J-PEAKS)” was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in AY2023. The project is working on “Developing the industrial cluster ecosystem integrating semiconductor/meta-matter and biomaterial fields based on the material visualization core technology using synchrotron radiation.” This is expected to give further impetus to research and development in the fields of semiconductors and biotechnology using synchrotron radiation, including the world’s only research on Knotted Chiral Meta Matter. In this way, we intend to utilize the strengths of HU’s center to create an interdisciplinary fusion ecosystem called “Hiroshima Research & Innovation Valley” that is expected to grow into a hub of “a beneficial loop involving people, knowledge, and resources” in ten years’ time.with plans to increase enrollment quota by 70 students in AY2023 and to further increase the quota at the School of Informatics and other semiconductor-related Schools and Graduate Schools from AY2025.HU also aims to develop human resources to promote DX in multiple fields by closely collaborating with world-leading universities, Arizona State University and Purdue University. “The U.S.-Japan University Partnership for Workforce Advancement and Research & Development in Semiconductors (UPWARDS) for the Future” is a collaboration between US semiconductor giant Micron and 11 Japanese and US universities, including HU. Our university is committed to pursuing research and development of new semiconductors and human resource development in cross-border industry-academia collaboration.I must admit that the future that awaits students entering society seems chaotic, but it is precisely because we live in such an era that the world is waiting for individuals who have acquired a broad range of education as well as specialist knowledge. In order to deal with challenging social issues, I hope that students will develop the habit of asking themselves not only how (how to solve problems) but also why (why such problems arise) on a daily basis and think about them from various angles, including their historical background.university. At HU, 24% of the students from all the Schools have cleared the score above, whereas the percentage goes up to 45.9% for the students from the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.I would like to encourage our students to utilize HU’s overseas networks and use various opportunities, such as its unique study abroad programs, to expand their own potential and see the world first-hand with their own eyes.It has been ten years since HU was selected for the Top Type (Type A) of the Top Global University Project (SGU) by the Ministry of Educa-tion, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2014. We have been fully committed to promoting the internationalization of HU by diversifying the backgrounds of our faculty and administrative members, improving the language skills of students, increasing the number of students sent abroad, and promoting bilateral exchanges of researchers and students between HU and the world-class universities. Over the past ten years, the university has made significant efforts to produce both international students and home students with overseas experience, enhancing its reputation as a global university.Through the internationalization of HU, we are enhancing the global competitiveness of Japanese higher education, developing an environmental infrastructure to nurture exceptional human resources, and promoting the overall internationalization of the country.Message from the PresidentAbout developing human resourcesThe most important role of the university is to provide an educational and research environment in which students can freely spread their wings to the world as well as to nurture highly ambitious students.Since AY2017, HU has been organizing lectures delivered by world leaders in sports, the arts, science, business and other fields, entitled “Becoming a Global Citizen.” Since AY2018, as part of the required course “Introduction to University Education”, new students from all Schools are required to attend the lectures twice. In AY2024, 12 lecturers including the following came to deliver their lectures at HU: HORIKAWA Keiko (a non-fiction writer); YAMASHITA Yoshinori (Representative Director and Chairperson of Ricoh Company, Ltd.); MOGI Kenichiro (a Neuroscientist); and Morley Robertson (an international journalist). While deepening students’ academic knowledge in specialized fields, I hope that they will also broaden their horizons without being limited by their own boundaries, and that the emotions that well up when they come into contact with the lifestyles and spirits of those top runners will lead them to their next actions.Meanwhile, HU is also working on fostering highly skilled information specialists who can contribute to Japan’s digital strategy promptly and are unique in the region, encompassing everything from software to hardware. In AY2018, the School of Informatics and Data Science was established, As a comprehensive research universityAs a university rich in diversity and internationalitySince becoming the president at HU, I have placed great importance on cultivating peace-pursuing, cultured individuals with an international mindset and a challenging spirit so that the university can foster individuals who can contribute to realizing peace on the global scale. In line with this philosophy, the university is committed to creating a campus where people of various nationalities, cultural backgrounds and ideas, full of motivation and curiosity, gather from all over the world, creating a learning environment rich in diversity and internationalism. As a result, we have achieved the following: as of May 2024, HU had 1,831 international students from 96 countries and regions; as of January 2024, it boasted 22 overseas bases in 14 countries and regions around the world. I considered it important to meet in person with the presidents of universities in their home countries, so I devoted myself to visiting Egypt, Mexico, Lithuania, Germany, the USA and other countries to set up overseas centers and conclude agreements. Our university has developed a wide range of study abroad programs where students can select a number of programs suited to their level and needs. In this way, we can give as many students as possible an opportunity to go and study abroad and high-quality education.HU has long been supporting its students improve their language skills. TOEIC® scores are known to indicate English communication skills of the candidates. As a rule of thumb, TOEIC® scores of 730 or above are considered the standard to be able to go to study at an overseas
