To ensure that the fruits of education and research activities are linked to the safety and security of society, the entire university will work together, led by the leaders of each initiative above.Message from the PresidentAbout 75+75th anniversaryThe year 2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Hiroshima University (HU), including the 75 years between the establishment of the Hakushima School (1874), our oldest predecessor school, and the birth of the new Hiroshima University (launched under the post-WWII school system).“The 75 + 75th Anniversary Project” saw the launch of the “Hiroshima University x Hiroshima Electric Railway 75 + 75th Anniversary Wrapped Trams and Buses project” in January 2024 where Hiroshima Electric Railway trams and buses are wrapped in original designs, running in the city of Hiroshima. In May of the same year, it participated in the “Hiroshima Flower Festival 2024” parade as well as sponsoring the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in the “Hiroshima University 75+75th Anniversary Going Forward with Hiroshima from now on! Phoenix Night Game”, which is a sponsored game in support of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. Through these efforts, we effectively enhanced HU’s image as a dynamic institution that moves forward alongside Hiroshima. In 2024, we will look back on the progress we have made so far, be deeply grateful for the support we have received from everyone, and set out towards becoming a “University of World-wide Repute and Splendor for Years into the Future.” It is a year of new beginnings. The cover of this report also expresses such sentiment.About President 5 Initiatives for Peace Sciences- New Peace Science (Creating Peace for Safety and Security) -In AY2023, the President formulated the President 5 Initiatives for Peace Sciences - New Peace Science (Creating Peace for safety and security) - (hereinafter referred to as “the 5 Initiatives”), which are focused on defining HU’s goals for the Fourth Mid-Term Objectives Period. In the context of HU intending to achieve the SDGs by 2030, our new philosophy of “Peace Science” is becoming increasingly important. As such, I believe that it is important for each of us to be involved in “peace” as our own issue and to take proactive action accordingly.I would like to build a world-class center of education and research that implements the university’s new philosophy of Peace Science, “Science for Sustainable Development.” In that process, HU will also aim to become an intellectual center that serves to link local communities and the international community, cultivating peace-pursuing, cultured individuals with an international mindset and a challenging spirit. The 5 Initiatives aims to provide people in the world with peace of mind through education and research activities that contribute to social security. This can be achieved by utilizing “convergence knowledge” at HU, which we can boast as the university has researchers from all fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. With such goal in place, the following five issues have been identified as leading issues for social change that the university tackles in an interdisciplinary manner:As a university dedicated to promoting peace and reaching out to the world
