(Japanese Page)38● It was a valuable experience to utilize my expertise to work with local people to solve problems.● I was able to work with local children and witness their rapid growth.● I worked with students from overseas and realized the difference in the way they spring into action.Studentsin actionMr. YAMAMOTO ran strong as the first runner for Japan in the men’s 400 m relay (4 x 100 m) final at the Bahamas 2024 World Athletics Relays held in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, in May 2024. Japan took full advantage of their strong baton passing skills in close competition with France and Great Britain, finishing in fourth place. Although Japan missed out on a medal for the second consecutive competition, they performed well and finished just 0.01 seconds behind third-placed France.Comments from participating studentsStrong performance in the men’s 400 m final at the World Athletics Relays. Japan came in 4th place!Past eventsIn January 2024, HU’s proposal, “Peace & Science Innovation Ecosystem,” was selected for the Japan Science and Technology Agency’s (JST) support initiative, the “Startup Ecosystem Co-creation Program for the New Industry Creation Fund for University Startups.” The vision of this program is to “create innovation in the world through the Pursuit of Peace,” and it will establish a GAP fund, expand support personnel, improve the entrepreneurial environment, and establish global bases.Mr. YAMAMOTO ShomaVOICESchool of Engineering, Cluster 2, 4th year studentSelected for the “Startup Ecosystem Co-creation Program for the New Industry Creation Fund for University Startups”Contributing to solving problems faced by local communities and revitalizing local communitiesActivities of selected projects in AY2023 (excerpts)The “Bridging Community Development Project,” one of HU’s community contribution initiatives, is a project in which local residents propose various issues, including maintaining and revitalizing the local community and economy, and the proposing resident and HU students and faculty form teams to utilize their areas of expertise and research results in working toward resolving the issues. In AY2023, 13 projects were selected from among 17 applications (7 new applications and 6 continuing projects). (The subsidy amount is 500,000 yen per case as a general rule.)We will continue to put the knowledge we have gained into practice and revitalize the local area with the planning skills, spirit of challenge, and initiative of HU students. We will also contribute to achieving SDGs Goal 11, “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.”Revitalizing the local community through the power of sportsHU has established the Hiroshima University Institute of Sports and the Hiroshima University Hospital Sports Medical Center, and it is actively engaged in education, research, and social contribution through sports. In November 2023, we held the “Higashihiroshima Children’s Sports Campus 2023” with the aim of allowing children to experience the fun of sports and the joy of physical activity. The event was attended by 268 elementary school students from Higashihiroshima City, and students from 10 organizations of HU Taiiku-kai (Sports Association) provided instruction in kendo, baseball, and other sports.In February 2024, we co-hosted with the Higashihiroshima City Education and Culture Promotion Foundation the eighth “ALL HIROSHIMA SPORTS SUMMIT” for AY2023 with the theme “Health Promotion Relay Talk Based on Sports Medicine and Science,” and approximately 100 people participated. We will continue to contribute to the development of students through sports and to the revitalization of the local community as a whole.“Hirodai Kitemin Seminar” to widely disseminate university knowledgeThe Hirodai Kitemin Seminar, based in the Hiroshima University Kiteminsai Lab, which opened in October 2022, covers a wide range of topics, from biology and environmental issues to space, cutting-edge science, society, and medicine.
