Utilizing the “one device per student” and ICT environment provided under the GIGA School Program, students learn interactively about local and controversial issues. In recent years, participants have expanded to include schools outside the prefecture and out-of-school children. Classes are coordinated by HU faculty and students and are held regularly once or twice a month. Through this initiative, we are exploring the future of public education with a declining population and in a digital society.YAMASAKI AkaneA young carer study conducted in collaboration with Higashihiroshima City in AY2022 revealed that being in situations in which the troubles experienced by the carer remain invisible to others can undermine the carer’s hopes for the future and impair his or her sense of individuality and that adults working in the education and welfare fields want to empathize with children’s difficulties but are unable to do so due to lack of know-how. In response to the above findings, we have been working with Higashihiroshima City on an initiative to support young carers since AY2023.Main efforts related to the Town & Gown InitiativeSupporting troubled childrenCOMMON Project aims to solve social issuesThe COMMON Project is one of the initiatives under the “Town & Gown Initiative” promoted by Higashihiroshima City and HU.“COMMON” is a play on words, representing the approach taken by HU and Higashihiroshima City in tackling common issues and our aim to solve social issues by taking turns teaching each other as the komon (Japanese for “advisor”).The aim is to serve as a catalyst for next-generation urban development or regional revitalization by effectively matching the “seeds” held by university faculty members with the “needs” of social issues faced by the city government so as to increase the number of initiatives.Main projectsConstructing a digital public sphere through linking distant schoolsProfessorGraduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences / School of EducationMain projects11projects
