We will play a leading role in urban development towards realizing a future society in which people from all over the world respect and accept each other regardless of their characteristics or roles.Members● Regular members: 7 organizations (4 groups)Hiroshima University/Ehime University/Higashihiroshima CityImabari CityShimane University/Hiroshima University/Izumo CityKure City● Associate member: 1 organizationRitsumeikan Asia Pacific University● Supporting member: 1 organizationSmart City Institute JapanActivity reportSocial and Industry-Academia Collaboration Toward “creating a new ocean and maritime base in Asia”In July 2023, Kure City, Hiroshima University, the Japan Coast Guard Academy, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation signed an agreement to promote the Kure City/Hiroshima University Town & Gown Initiative.The agreement aims to create a hub for international education, research, and social collaboration in the ocean and maritime fields in Asia and to revitalize local communities in Kure City, which is home to a wealth of history, culture, and monozukuri traditions related to the ocean, by working with international organizations to develop human resources that can respond to internationalization; to maintain and restore the marine environment and marine resources, which are global issues; and to engage in advanced research and development in ocean and maritime digital and green transformation.The President 5 Initiatives for Peace Sciences also aims for “Ocean and Maritime Governance and Sustainability through Asian Center of Excellence,” and following the signing of this agreement, researchers and students from around the world will be invited to Kure City through cutting-edge research and development on ocean and maritime matters and interdisciplinary degree programs so as to create ocean and maritime innovation and promote regional development.In January 2024, we established the “Kure City/Hiroshima University Town & Gown Initiative Promotion Council for the Marine Culture City of Kure” with the aim of actively advancing these initiatives. The Council comprises 60 organizations, including government agencies, educational institutions, related groups, and companies, and will come together to discuss and address issues related to the ocean and maritime sector and revitalization of local economies.The National Town & Gown Initiative Promotion Council establishedIn October 2023, together with Higashihiroshima City, Kure City, Ehime University, Imabari City, Shimane University, Izumo City, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, and the Smart City Institute Japan, we held a signing ceremony for the letter of intent for the establishment of the National Town & Gown Initiative Promotion Council, and we held our first general meeting.The National Town & Gown Initiative Promotion Council will share a vision of a sustainable future and work together with other organizations with the aim of concretizing and generalizing the model that is the “Town & Gown Initiative,” which aims to contribute to regional revitalization, and spreading it throughout Japan.Aiming for both sustainable regional development and the evolution of the university
