Since AY2018, all new first-years from all schools are required to attend this course twice as part of the required set of courses titled “Introduction to University Education.”Becoming a Global Citizen Nurturing global talent as a “University of Peace”As a “University of Peace,” HU aims to deepen international understanding in students and cultivate talented human resources who can ponder peace from a variety of perspectives. The “Peace Science Courses,” which are required for all undergraduate students, deepen students’ understanding of peace through themes such as war and conflict, poverty, population growth, and the environment. The common assignment for the students is to visit places such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, watch films about peace, and then write a report on the experience. Each year, outstanding students are awarded prizes. In AY2023, 2,685 students took the course. In addition, HU hosts the “Peace Lecture Marathon,” a series of peace-themed lectures in which we invite government representatives and ambassadors based in Tokyo from around the world to speak about the importance of passing on peace to future generations. So far, eight marathons have been held, with a total of over 1,000 participants. At the seventh marathon held in May 2024, Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn of ASEAN gave a lecture. Many students asked questions during the Q&A session, and some commented that “A lecture from such an international leader who is both an expert and a practitioner was very informative” and “It made me think deeply about how ASEAN and Japan are trying to promote peace and prosperity.” We took this opportunity to award Secretary General Kao the title of “Specially Invited Professor.”Cultivating individuals that are highly cultured and equipped with outstanding specialized knowledge
