Guests for this poetry reading included actress YOSHINAGA Sayuri and guitarist MURAJI Soichi, who has performed with prestigious orchestras both in Japan and abroad, including the NHK Symphony Orchestra. At the reading session, Ms. Yoshinaga recited atomic bomb poems such as “Prologue” by TOGE Sankichi and “Umashimenkana” (Bringing Forth New Life) by KURIHARA Sadako. The more than 500 participants were captivated by the breathtaking atmosphere created by Ms. YOSHINAGA’s reading and Mr. MURAJI’s music, and they listened intently.For HU, which upholds “The Pursuit of Peace” as one of its principles, this was an opportunity to once again reflect on the preciousness of peace.Hiroshima University original design wrapped tram and buses unveiling ceremony heldOn January 15, 2024, an unveiling ceremony was held at the Hiroshima Electric Railway Co., Ltd. Senda Depot to unveil the “Hiroshima University x Hiroshima Electric Railway 75 + 75th Anniversary Wrapped Trams and Buses.” This project involves wrapping one tram and two buses run by Hiroshima Electric Railway in original Hiroshima University designs and running them in the city of Hiroshima for one year from January 2024. The wrapping design was openly sought within the university and created based on suggestions submitted by students and staff. To make the project a reality, we raised donations through crowdfunding, and it was completed thanks to the support of many people, including alumni and local residents. Carrying the sentiments of all supporters, Hiroshima University’s original wrapped tram and buses are continuing to operate around the city of Hiroshima.NERPS 2024 Conference in HiroshimaThe Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS) at Hiroshima University held the NERPS 2024 Conference (an international conference on peace and sustainability) for four days from March 6 to 9, 2024. A total of 44 sessions were held at this international conference, including panel discussions and workshops. Sixteen universities and research institutes contributed to this international conference as partner institutions by planning and implementing sessions, or in other forms.HU participates for the first time in the 2024 Hiroshima Flower Festival’s “Flower Parade”On May 3, 2024, Hiroshima University participated for the first time in the “2024 Hiroshima Flower Festival” held in Hiroshima City in the “Grand Flower Parade,” with the title “Hiroshima University 75+75th Anniversary Parade.” The Hiroshima Flower Festival has been held since 1977 as a festival of flowers for peace connecting Hiroshima with the world, and this year marks its 47th anniversary. We participated in the parade as part of the 75+75th Anniversary Project, with the aim of conveying to many people the history of Hiroshima University and its determination to continue to challenge itself in the future, as well as to take advantage of this opportunity for the public to feel closer to HU.
